Frequently Asked Questions

Where are you?

Jabiru’s main office is located at the community annex situated behind the Bracken Ridge Library. For bus routes and our postal address, click on the Contact us page.

What do you do?

Jabiru Community Youth and Children’s Services is a not-for-profit organisation based at Bracken Ridge. Our organisation works with children, young people and families to build better communities.

Jabiru Community Youth and Children’s Services has two arms:

  • Jabiru Kids – a before and after school care program that runs at 16 primary schools around Brisbane
  • Jabiru REspec – a youth and community program which works with young people and their families around Brisbane north.

Where does the name Jabiru come from?

The name Jabiru was chosen to reflect our commitment to working with children, young people, and families. Through the name, we seek to be associated with the strong natural family, place, and community links that are important to the Jabiru, Australia’s only true stork. Each year, the Jabiru flies to Brisbane’s wetlands from as far away as the Northern Territory to nest and raise its young.

Are your services free?

Yes. All of Jabiru REspec’s programs are free to young people and their families. Occasionally you may be asked to contribute to special recreational activities, however, these are always planned well in advance to give you the maximum warning. We will never plan an activity or promote a program where costs are barriers to participation.

If I get referred to your organisation, do I HAVE to participate?

No. Our programs will never force you to participate. We will offer you information about our programs and talk with you about why you may not wish to participate, but we will never force you to work with us. We endeavour to ensure that all barriers to participation are eliminated – and that means we may provide funding, transport, resources, interpreters or support people.

What age group can access your service?

Jabiru REspec has multiple programs that are funded to support different client groups. The majority of our programs are accessible to young people of high school age. The Early Years Family Support Hub program supports families with children 0-8 years old.

If I have an idea about something I’d like to do in the community, can you help me make it happen?

Absolutely! Don’t hesitate to contact us and share you ideas. If you have energy for it, we’ll figure out a way to make it happen :)
