Get Set for Work

Get Set for Work (GSFW) is a personal support and employment preparation program for young people aged 15-19 who have left school early and are not involved in other training or employment pathways.

GSFW is designed to support young people to achieve their life and work goals through a strengths-based, developmental approach which combines personal support, practical training and experiential learning.

The GSFW program covers:

  • Job preparation and skills development – including job search skills, writing resumes, applying for jobs, interview techniques, work etiquette, blue cards for construction, first aid certificates, identifying career goals and work experience
  • Life skills and personal development – including cooking, nutrition, budgeting, accommodation assistance, renting laws and regulations, learner’s licence program and team work skills
  • Contextualised numeracy and literacy education
  • Awareness of self and society – including workshops that explore assertiveness, aggression, the effects of drugs and alcohol, the impact of smoking, personal values, taking control of your life, and communication skills
  • Certificates through Brisbane North Institute of TAFE – participants can complete their Certificate I in Work Preperation (Community Service) and Certificate I in Active Volunteering (Community Services).
  • Recreation, time off and fun.

Funding

GSFW is funded by the Department of Employment, Economic Development and Innovation (DEEDI), as part of the Skilling Queenslanders for Work program.

Rationale for the program

The education system has changed enormously in recent years. Young people now need to stay at school until they turn 16 or have completed year 10. If they leave school, they either need to be earning (working full time) or learning (studying full time at school or with another recognised training provider).

Remaining in mainstream school can be very difficult for some young people. They may face a range of life circumstances or barriers that make it difficult to study, including:

  • Homelessness
  • Family conflict and breakdown
  • Drug and alcohol abuse
  • Issues at school
  • Peer-related issues
  • Financial burdens

GSFW provides personal support and work preparation for young people who, for whatever reason, have not remained in the mainstream school system.
