REAP

REAP – which stands for Respect, Effort, Achievement, Progress – is a flexible learning program for young people. It provides an opportunity for young people to gain an education outside of the traditional school setting.

REAP has been operated by Jabiru Community Youth and Children’s Services for 8 years. It is a partnership between Jabiru REspec, Sandgate State High School, and Bracken Ridge State High School. It is funded through Education Queensland and Queensland’s Education and Training Reforms for the Future (ETRF) program.

REAP is facilitated by a teacher and a youth worker. It operates from the Jabiru building at Bracken Ridge, and has a capacity to work with 20 young people at a time. Students who participate in REAP must be enrolled at either Bracken Ridge or Sandgate State High School.

There are no fees associated with participating in REAP.

Scope of the program

REAP is designed for young people aged between 15 and 18 who want to complete Years 10, 11 or 12. It is designed for young people who are not currently engaged in school, or who are having difficulties in maintaining their education in a traditional school setting.

Educational goals for each young person involved in REAP are established with the support of our full-time teacher. Young people can obtain Access 10 in Math and English (Year 10), English Communication and Pre-Vocational Math (Years 11 and 12), or Certificate 1 in Work Education. Work experience placements can be arranged to help participants to experience a variety of career choices. School-based traineeships, apprenticeships, construction blue cards, first aid training, and workplace health and safety courses can be organised.

REAP participants are supported in their day-to-day lives and encouraged to develop their life skills by our full-time youth worker. A wide range of recreational and skilling activities are developed to help young people to set goals and achieve career opportunities.

We encourage healthy minds and bodies by providing healthy foods for young people to prepare their own breakfast and lunch. Sharing meals and cooking for one another is an integral part of the program, and promote positive connections with each other.

The REAP program operates from 9.00am to 2.00pm on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays (during school terms).
