The Youth Support Coordinator (YSC) Program supports young people who are at risk of disengaging prematurely from the senior years of school. It is funded by the Department of Communities and delivered in partnership with Education Queensland.
Jabiru REspec has two YSC workers, who cover the State High Schools at Sandgate, Aspley, Bracken Ridge, Wavell Heights and Earnshaw, and Aviation College.
YSCs work with young people and, where appropriate, with their families to provide information and support that will contribute to the young person’s continued engagement with education and training in both schools and TAFEs. YSCs provide a valuable link between schools, TAFE and the community sector.
YSCs respond to the issues identified by young people, including issues of family conflict, homelessness and other home or school based circumstances. YSCs may also help young people to overcome practical barriers to staying at school, such as transport and accommodation.
YSCs work with young people in the senior phase of their schooling (Years 10, 11 and 12), who have been identified by their schools as being ‘at risk’ of not completing their senior education.
